The Ladies section was founded in 1868 and was known as Westward Ho! Ladies Golf Club, Playing on a 18 hole course situated out near the sandhills. The Ladies Club was financially "self maintained" until 1928 when a 9 hole "relief" course was built to the West of the present course. This course was used by all members, Northam Artisan Golf Club and Northam Ladies Golf Club (wives of Artisans). By 1931 Northam Golf Club Ladies were allowed to play on the long links. The last mention of Westward Ho! Ladies Golf Club was in 1935 but the present Royal North Devon Ladies Section has functioned and survived, most successfully, ever since. Long may it continue !! |
